ASSISTANT COACHES' PAGE

Week 6

October 8, 2000

Once again this football season, pngfootball.com will interview an assistant coach off the PN-G staff. The assistant coach works very hard week in and week out to prepare the Indians to play on Friday nights. Their hard work and intense preparation are important to PN-G's success. Many times they are the ones who develop close relationships with their football pupils, and their coaching duties put them on the front lines in game preparation.

Many times the assistant coach goes unrecognized in his contribution to Indian football. At pngfootball.com, we appreciate and recognize the work done by the assistant coaches. This is their page.

This week's featured assistant coach:

Richard Bethea, Tight Ends and Special Teams Coach

Coach Bethea's Background

1977  Jefferson Junior High, Jefferson, TX

1979  Hitchcock Junior High, Hitchcock, TX

1980  Santa Fe High School, Santa Fe, TX, 1 year Freshmen, 1 year JV, 2 years Varsity Offensive Line

1984  Bridge City High School, Varsity Offensive Line and Special Teams Coach

1995 PN-G High School, Varsity Coach

On the Tight Ends

Our starting tight end is # 80 Jeremy Davis. He was an offensive tackle last year. He starts at defensive tackle also. We also have two returnees from last year, # 81 Jared Gary and # 82 Michael Brignac. They all play a lot because they all start on defense. We also have at tight end # 48 Chris Block and # 88 Jeff Manuel

They play real well on the defensive side of the ball where they all start, and we try to rotate them offensively. We we go to a double tight end formation we get them in there on a situational basis. Jared catches the ball well. He caught a touchdown pass vs. Kelly, and had a big catch vs. Vidor. He's versatile--he has good hands and quickness.

On the Special Teams

Other than one mistake (a fumbled punt), we played real well against Vidor. Joey Price had three kickoffs into the end zone. He had his best game punting--he had a 37.5 yard average. He had never been a punter until this year.

Michael Brignac is our deep snapper, but he had a hurt back, and Tony Bowser stepped in and did an excellent job.

Vidor was coming after us late in the game trying to make something happen, and our kids did an excellent job of picking them up and keeping them out. Our play in the Vidor game could have been better, but overall it was good.
