ASSISTANT COACHES' PAGE

Week 7

October 10, 1999

Each week, pngfootball.com will interview an assistant coach off the PN-G staff. The assistant coach works very hard week in and week out to prepare the Indians to play on Friday nights. Their hard work and intense preparation are important to PN-G's success. Many times they are the ones who develop close relationships with their football pupils, and their coaching duties put them on the front lines in game preparation.

Many times the assistant coach goes unrecognized in his contribution to Indian football. At pngfootball.com, we appreciate and recognize the work done by the assistant coaches. This is their page.

On the Lincoln Game

Jeff Bergeron had 8 carries for 60 yards, Dustin Long had 7 carries for 102 yards and 2 TDs, and Bo Wortham had 11 carries for 61 yards and 1 TD. Bo had 2 catches this week too.

Both runningbacks blocked real well. Jeff had one of his better games blocking against Lincoln. Both he and Bo go till the whistle blows. They always hustle. Jeff made a great peel back block on a pass one time--he had his head up on it.

On the Runningbacks and Backfield

This year it's been an adjustment for our backs. We are split about 50-50 running and throwing. Our offense is designed to split up our running game among our quarterback, tailback, and fullback. It's been like that here a long time. Even when they ran the wishbone here in the 70s, the load was divided up.

All our backs have to block. Jeff Bergeron's our fullback this year. He's not real big, but I"m proud of his blocking. I always tell him we can find someone to run the football, but not someone who can block.

     Our Personnel

Tailback Bo Wortham--He's a returning starter. He had over 950 yards in 11 games last year. He's extremely tough. He has great feet--he's hard to knock off his feet. You can't arm tackle him, he'll run right through it. Against LC-M, he ran an isolation play for 50 yards, and guys just pinged right off him. Anything you ask him, he'll give you 100%. Never ever gets intimidated by anyone. Great hands--has 13 catches for 192 yards right now. That's near the top of the list in the district. So far, he has 66 rushes for 397 yards and 7 TDs.

Fullback Jeff Bergeron--Jeff's best attribute is his vision. He sees stuff so well. He makes great cuts. I've hardly ever seen him make a bad read when he carries the ball. He had to play fullback this year--he's always been a tailback. Last year we played a lot of "I" formation, but this year we're playing a lot of split backs. I'm really really pleased with his blocking this year and his running. He's the leading rusher on the team right now. So far, he has 59 rushes for 411 yards and 3 TDs.

Wingback Thomas Baxter--He's the backup tailback. We used him in the wing formation. He has 9 rushes for 92 yards and 2 TDs. He's quick--one of the best backup kids I've had. He's a very capable, bright kid. He's playing some cornerback. He's a heck of a kid too.

On Bridge City

Sometimes, the scariest ones to play are against those teams when they are 0-6. We're going to try to run the ball a little. They play hard. We've got to get our kids ready for a team like that. Lincoln played tough; I think our kids need to get re-grouped...get polished up.
