ASSISTANT COACHES' PAGE

Week 7

October 15, 2000

Once again this football season, pngfootball.com will interview an assistant coach off the PN-G staff. The assistant coach works very hard week in and week out to prepare the Indians to play on Friday nights. Their hard work and intense preparation are important to PN-G's success. Many times they are the ones who develop close relationships with their football pupils, and their coaching duties put them on the front lines in game preparation.

Many times the assistant coach goes unrecognized in his contribution to Indian football. At pngfootball.com, we appreciate and recognize the work done by the assistant coaches. This is their page.

This week's featured assistant coach:

     Dan Welch, Offensive Line Coach

Coach Welch's Background

1982 PN-G Graduate

2 Years Assistant Coach, Port Neches Middle School

1 Year PN-G 9th Grade Head Coach

4 Years at North Shore, 3 Years as Offensive Coordinator

1 Year Galveston Ball, Runningback Coach

6 Years Offensive Line Coach, PN-G

On the WO-S Game

We knew their defense was going to be good. Our game plan was to attack right at them. We knew they had great runners on defense. We thought we could throw the ball some. We hoped to make a big play. The kids did a good job in the week before preparing for them.

On  TJ

TJ also has great athletes on defense. Their defensive tackles are real big. Their linebackers run well, and they have two good defensive ends. They give you a lot of defensive looks. We have to be real sharp.

On the Offensive Line

Colin Anderson, Sr, Strong Tackle--Colin moved in last year from New Mexico. He's 220 lbs and real green. He's learning every day.

Raymond Melancon, Sr, Offensive Guard--Raymond was a fullback last year. He's 215 lbs. He's strong as a bull. He's continuing to learn every practice. He's probably the quickest QG I've had play for me. he's gaining confidence as far as blocking schemes and learning to react on the move.

Paul O'Rourke, Jr, Center--Paul played on the JV last year. He's about 200-205 lbs. He's also real green. He played center on JV, but varsity's a little different. He, along with the others, are getting better every day at practice. Paul stepped in for for Justin Mercer, who was playing both ways. Paul started vs. Crosby because Mercer was sick, and Paul's done a fine job.

Elliot Adams, Sr, Strong Guard--Elliot is a returning starter. He started 16 games last year. He's by far our most experienced offensive lineman. He's handicapped now; he has a broken hand and he's playing in a cast. He's a guy I can rely on during the game with some good answers when I'm talking to the offensive line on the sideline.

Joseph Hollis, Sr, Strong Tackle--Joseph was a backup ST last year. He's 230 lbs. He dislocated his finger and was playing in a cast. He just got it off. He's a hard worker and gives great effort. He's always been injured, in both his sophomore and junior years. He's been able to stay healthy this year and has been a real asset to us.

The offensive line as a unit have worked very hard this year. We knew we weren't going to be as experienced. Every single one of them bust their chops in practice and give us great looks. I coach the backups as hard as the starters, and their positive attitude helps us. It's a great asset to have players at PN-G like that.
