I think given the weather our kids played in, they played an outstanding game, and did just what we needed to do. Outstanding time defensively against the run. Offensively we controlled the football. As both teams played tremendous defense, our defense was able to force turnovers deep in Van Alstyne territory that led to both of our scores. All year long, our offense and defense complemented each other exceptionally well. Our defense forced three and out on many occasions. Offensively we controlled the football 35 minutes to 13. Time of possession was extremely important--keeping the ball away from them. Given the weather and playing conditions, the kids executed extremely well. We were even impressed that Joseph Mann and our receivers were 6-10 for 80 yards in those conditions. He made some great throws. Another key was A. J. Mann came in and ran like he did. He ran great. On the 2001 Season We had a good season. It was a relatively smooth regular season. We kind of rolled through the regular season fairly comfortably. I don't think we really knew what we had until we ran into some serious tests--first Brookshire-Royal, where we came from behind to win a big football game. Then our kids really had to test their mettle against Hemphill. Those were the most gratifying wins as the kids had to battle back. Obviously, it is great to have a second opportunity to win a state championship. Having come so close the first time and losing, we all realize how rare it is to play for a state championship. Then to capitalize on it and win that second time--not only were we happy, but we were greatly relieved we made the most of that opportunity. All of us associated with Blanco football are tremendously appreciative of the support of the community, faculty, and the administration of BISD. I personally would like to thank the assistant coaches for all their efforts and time and energy that they put forth at the expense of their families. --Brian Emerson, Head Coach Previous Editions from Coach Emerson: |
