Hemphill was a good football team. Looking back on the game, one of the keys was the kids maintained their composure during the entire 48 minutes. I think probably our ability to manage the clock at both the end of the first half and at the end of the ballgame proved to be pivotal. Our kids did a tremendous job of executing. We scored with 9 seconds left in the first half, and then we came back and scored those last two TDs in the last five minutes of the game. We gave a lot of thought to onside kicking after the next to the last TD, but we decided we didn't want to give them good field position. We explained that to the kids. We kicked the ball deep, played good defense, and scored the winning touchdown with 45 seconds left in the game. I think our heart, and what we refer to as "bulldog mentality," prevailed. That would have been a good game coming in the sixth or seventh game of the season, but it's so much sweeter coming in the Semifinals. The stakes were a lot greater. Upcoming Opponent: Van Alstyne Van Alstyne is a good football team. Very disciplined. Sound fundamentally. They don't appear to make mistakes to put them in the hole. They're not going to beat themselves. Their offensive line appears to be physically strong, and they have three good runningbacks, including their quarterback. Like us, they're not going to make a living throwing the football, they like to keep it on the ground, but they can throw well when they want to. Their base offense is the Pro I. Defensively they line up in a 5-2. Their front five defenders are solid, and they rely on their linebackers to make plays. No many people have had success moving the ball against them. --Brian Emerson, Head Coach Previous Editions from Coach Emerson: |
