ASSISTANT COACHES' PAGE

Week 5

September 26, 1999

Each week, pngfootball.com will interview an assistant coach off the PN-G staff. The assistant coach works very hard week in and week out to prepare the Indians to play on Friday nights. Their hard work and intense preparation are important to PN-G's success. Many times they are the ones who develop close relationships with their football pupils, and their coaching duties put them on the front lines in game preparation.

Many times the assistant coach goes unrecognized in his contribution to Indian football. At pngfootball.com, we appreciate and recognize the work done by the assistant coaches. This is their page.

On the Receiver Corps

Our split end, Justin Baxter, has 20 catches for 181 yards and 1 TD. He's the leading reception receiver in the area. Nobody has more catches; he's more our possession type guy. He's a big kid, 6' 2", 185-190. He's a big body, and has superb hands. He catches the ball extremely well. He uses his body to get open.

Our flanker is Joey Price. He has 11 catches for 201 yards and 2 TDs. He averages more yards/catch. He has real good quickness, and real good hands. He's probably a 4.7 40-yard dash guy. He has tremendous speed.

Our other split end Ryan Norton has 4 catches for 59 yards. He came to the forefront last week. He had 3 catches for 53 yards and a TD vs. LC-M. We run plays in with Norton and Baxter, and occasionally Jonathan Lumbley some to give Price a break.

We've got some backs catching the ball too. In some of our formation, our tailback Bo Wortham goes out as a receiver. He caught four passes this week. He has 8 receptions for 137 yards to go along with his rushing stats. He could be a receiver if he weren't a runningback because of his good hands. He adds to our receiving corps. Our fullback Jeff Bergeron has seven catches coming out of the backfield. So we spread it out.

On the Receivers as Blockers

We work real hard on blocking, because we run the option, and we have important blocks. This past game grading their blocking I give it an A+. They did a tremendous job blocking this past week. Baxter, Price, Lumbley--all did a tremendous job downfield. We stalk block a lot and id a tremendous job of that. On Bo Wortham's touchdown, Lumbley had the clearing block. They're like gnats on you. Baxter's a big strong kid. We take a lot of pride in our blocking. We stress that--we've got to.

On Dustin Long

Having Dustin makes it a lot easier on the receivers because he gets the ball there so quickly. They have time to do something with it. We played together during the summer 7 on 7. The timing's not where we want it to be just yet, but we're getting there. Dustin's arm, and his ability to read defenses and get it to the open guy is an asset any receiver would like to have.

On TJ

TJ has a lot of quickness on defense. They like to play you in tight man, and a hard cover 2. It's always a challenge when you play a team with quickness in the secondary. It will be a challenge for us.
