| Coach Burnett Talks About Week 1, 2000
September 5, 2000 Pre-SeasonSo far we've been through three scrimmages. We've progressed real well. As far as the coaching staff is concerned, our players are executing fairly well for this time of year. We got a lot out of our scrimmages. We scrimmaged three 5A teams--West Brook, Baytown Sterling, and Humble. We felt like we got something out of each one of our scrimmages. We've got a long way to go to be a championship team, but we're going to be patient. We've got five pre-district games to work ourselves there. We've got to stay healthy. We lost two quarterbacks--Cody Elkins (broken ankle) and Tony Bowser (knee). Bowser had orthoscopic surgery on his knee and will be out at least another week. Right now we have two juniors playing quarterback--Kirk hallmark and John Frazier--and they're progressing real well. We just feel like with the experience we have playing all those games and the type effort our kids give, we're right on track to having a successful team again. On Crosby Crosby runs a real patient offense--the wing formation. They will run power off tackle and power sweep outside the wing. They hammer the dive in there. They don't throw often, but when they do they're wide open. They don't mind getting 3-4 yards and burn the clock. We can't let them play ball hog on us. They have a tailback that runs a 4.5 40. Their linemen are big and strong. They have a real good team. They were 10-2 last year. Their only loss in the playoffs was to Lamarque. They're used to winning. They're big up front and can run real well. It's a game where we really have to concentrate and make fewer mistakes, because they're capable of winning the game. --Matt Burnett, Head Coach |
