Coach Burnett Talks About Week 1

August 31, 1999

    West Brook Scimmage

Coming out of the West Brook scrimmage, I thought the team performed real well. Our Defense was real aggressive and running to the ball. The Offense accumulated over 800 yards offense in 90 plays of scrimmage. I was impressed with the way our kids executed the offense.

Dustin Long threw the ball well. He had an assortment of passes--screens, short passes, and also completed some deep ones--so he's ready to go. I was impressed with the conditioning of the kids too. It was a long scrimmage, but our kids reacted well. I attribute that to the fact we stay busy at practice. We don't bring the JV with us, we scrimmage against the varsity, vs. ourselves, and I attribute that to helping our conditioning.

     Kelly

Kelly is the Catholic League defending state champion. They are well coached. George Eskue has been coaching them for 16 years. I fully expect them to be prepared for everything we do. Their tailback runs a 10.8 100 meters. Their slotback Peter Simon has a lot of explosive speed that we're concerned with. Their quarterback, Persia, is a returning starter. So offensively, they have a lot of weapons.

Last year they jumped out in front of us 14-0. They ran a revers and scored, and the next series their defensive end returned a fumble for a score. So in the first two minutes of the game last year, it was 14-0 Kelly. I'm concerned that they can beat us. We ended up winning 31-14.

Their defense is real sound. They run a 50 defense, with a noseman. They keep it simple. They will slant their front people and send their linebackers. It's a game we definitely need to compete and play sound football in order to win.

     Injuries

Jay Domingue (DT) will not play. He sustained a deep bruise to his knee. There is a little swelling there so we will hold him out. Chris Marshall, our big offensive tackle, is having neck problems. He won't play. Other than that, we will be all right.

     Conclusion

We're playing at Durley Stadium in Beaumont. We scrimmaged West Brook there last week, so we're familiar with the field.

The main thing--Find a way to win it!
