Coach Burnett Talks About Week 4, 2000

Kingwood Game

The Kingwood game started out real smooth. We kicked off to them and stopped them. Everything was going good, then we threw an interception. We were lucky enough to hold them, we got the ball back, and we scored. From that time on we got into a situation where we turned the ball over. We played on a real short field defensively, and Kingwood took advantage of that. It was 14-7 at halftime. We fumbled several times and threw three interceptions in the first half. It's hard to beat a good football team like that.

In the second half we got a punt blocked. It made it another tough situation. We finally scored in the fourth quarter and got a touchdown and a field goal. Those late scores made the final score 24-17.

To our kids' credit we gave great effort, like they always have had at PN-G. I'm just thinking that it's got to be a situation where we got all the bad things that can happen to us out of the way in one game. It humbles us a little. We go all season with a few turnovers, and that game a punt goes through our punter's legs. A punt blocked, three interceptions, fumbles. We're just hoping we got them all over with. We outgained them in first downs and in everything except the turnover margin. Our kids are real intelligent and understand we were lucky to be in the game.

This week we need to work on ball security and punt block protection and correct these things and get ready for homecoming. WE need to remember we played three good teams that will expose any weaknesses we have. Those teams--Crosby, Jacksonville, and Kingwood--showed us what we need to improve upon. We have two more games before district to get things corrected. We will.

On Kelly

Defensively, Kelly is very aggressive. They run a 5-3 stack. They have five down linemen and three linebackers stacked behind them. They stunt the noseguard right and left. They really get after you. They're well coached. Offensively they run the "I" formation. Their head coach is Randy Theriot. He's in his first year there. They kind of look like us on video. They've had some good games where they've been in control then let it get away from them. We're going to have to play sharp and get after them for a homecoming victory.

Injuries

RB Jeff Bergeron has a bruised shoulder and is questionable for this week.

Defensive Leaders

     Defensive leaders against Kingwood   were:

DB Jeff LeBlanc--7 first contacts

LB Tracye Boudoin--5 first contacts, 3 assists, 1 tackle for loss

LB Cody Clark--6 first contacts, 7 assists, 1 tackle for loss

E Michael Brignac--8 first contacts, 2 assists, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack
