Coach Burnett Talks About Week 5, 2000

October 1, 2000

Kelly Game

The Kelly game was a lot of fun for the kids because it was homecoming and we were able to score a lot of points early. That's always fun. Our offense executed some good play action early and kept Kelly off guard. Troy Cooley's blocked field goal was a big momentum booster for us. When he took it out of the air and scored the fans, players, coaches all got excited.

We played real tough defense for the second week in a row. Kelly did a real good job of adjusting their offense. They couldn't run on us, so they ran some shotgun formations. It was good in that we could run all our blitzes. We didn't  have them all in against Jacksonville. We got some good licks on their quarterback. We hit him almost every time.

I thought our kids did a good job considering Bergeron wasn't playing. Flores and LeBlanc stepped up at runningback. The offensive line was crisp and sharp. I thought overall the whole team really grew up. That's the benefit of having a tough schedule. Each player concentrated on his individual role, and as a result the whole team had a good outing.

On Vidor

Vidor is 0-4. They've had some injury problems. Their number one quarterback has been out two games with an ankle sprain. They've also had some turnover problems. It's causing them some problems offensively and winning games. I expect Coach Mathews and his staff to have them prepared for us. They always play well against the Indians.

Defensively, they really stack up to the tight end side and force people to throw. They do a good job against the running game. They're real aggressive. Their coaching staff does a real good job of keeping their kids motivated. I know they'll be up to the challenge of playing us.

Injuries

RB Jeff Bergeron will probably still miss this week with a separated shoulder. Tackle Mike Thibodeaux is still out pending a doctor's release on his back.

Defensive Leaders

     Defensive leaders against Kelly  were:

DE Jared Gary--1 unassisted tackle, 3 assists, 1 tackle for loss, 6 QB pressures

LB Tracye Boudoin--4 unassisted tackles, 5 assists, 3 quarterback pressures

LB Cody Clark--7 unassisted tackles, 2 assists, 2 tackles for loss, 1 blocked pass

DB Adam LeDoux--4 unassisted tackles, 4 assists, 3 tackles for loss, 1 blocked pass, 1 QB pressure, 1 sack

DB Troy Cooley--4 unassisted tackles, 3 assists, 1 recovered fumble, 1 interception, 2 blocked kicks, 1 scored touchdown off a blocked kick
