Coach Burnett Talks About Week 5

September 26, 1999

LC-M Game

Little Cypress did a good job in the first half. When visiting with their coaches after the game, they said that's the best they executed their game plan ever. They did a good job.

Offensively, we were real close to scoring a bunch of points, but little things were getting to us. At halftime, it was 10-6 LC-M. I was really glad our kids faced some adversity like that, because I could tell going into the game they kind of had the feeling, LC-M being 1-2 and all, that they approached the game not as concentrated as had been. So at halftime  the kids refocused.

In the second half, we limited LC-M's offense to 11 yards and 1 first down. We scored the first four times we touched the football. So we totally dominated the second half. It helped our kids to realize we're only as good as we play. We've go to make plays and really play with a lot of emotion to get things done.

We came out real well. We got to play a bunch of kids at homecoming. It's important to play a bunch of boys. The most important thing, however, is we're 1-0 in district.

Thomas Jefferson

     Record:    0-4

TJ's got a lot of speed. Their runningback, Tony Tompkins, is an extremely quick athlete. We're going to have to do a good job of getting a handle on him. Defensively, they're pretty simple. They run a 50 defense, 2-deep most of the time, but they're aggressive with it.

Last week Nederland put it on 'em pretty good, but TJ had some bad things happen to them early. They had 2 interceptions and 2 punt returns for touchdowns. That took them out of their game plan early. They got in a hole early and really had a touch time.

Historically, the Yellow Jackets always play tough because of the past tradition the two schools have. We're expecting a good game from them. We're playing at their place; I"m sure they'll be excited. They have such tremendous athletes we can't relax. We have to get after 'em.

Injuries

We came out of the LC-M  game healthy.

Defensive Leaders

     Defensive leaders against LC-M were:

LB Trayce Boudoin-4 first contacts, 6 assists, 10 tackles, 1 for loss

OLB Jared Hanks--4 first contacts, 2 assists, 6 tackles, 1 QB pressure

DE Ramon Lopez--4 first contacts, 2 assists, 6 tackles, 1 for loss

LB Cody Clark--3 first contacts, 2 assists, 5 tackles, 2 for loss

We didn't have a lot of tackles--we only got 17 defensive snaps in the second half. But we did a good job.
