Coach Burnett Talks About Week 6

October 3, 1999

TJ Game

The TJ game was the first game we really clicked in all areas. We've been waiting for a game where our offense, defense, and kicking game played well at the same time. We'd been hitting and missing in earlier games, but against TJ we really got rolling.

The biggest key was giving our offense the ball eight times in the first half, because the more times our offense gets the ball, it gives us the opportunity to see how they're going to defend us.

We took a page from out old play book and decided to go with stunts. We had a stunt package against what TJ did the best. I really helped us, because he got several turnovers, and when we didn't get a turnover we made them punt. As a team, we had 4 sacks, and 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Sometimes things click just right and things were clicking. We had 'em 50-0 at the half. We're fortunate to have the quarterback we have and the kids we have that can catch the football. It would be a shame to have a great quarterback who can only hand off to people.

Another good thing about the game was that we got to play all our kids in the second half. That helps the team.

Overall, it was a great game.

Port Arthur Lincoln

Lincoln's got a real fine runningback, Shanderrick Charles. He's an outstanding player; he's really having a good year. He's the catalyst of their offensive attack. Defensively, they have a lot of athletes and good speed.

Historically, Lincoln always played the Indians real tough. So I expect them to come over here and play us a real tough game.

On This Point in the Season

We're at the halfway mark, and the kids have really done a great job of working on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. As long as they keep that up we'll keep getting better.

I was really impressed with their attitude last week. Sometimes when a team is successful there's a tendency to relax, but this team is intelligent enough to know that working at practice and paying attention to details is what got us where we are. We still have some big fish to fry on down the warpath, and we need to keep getting better.

Injuries

Tight end C. J. Blier sprained his ankle, and he's probable for this week.

Defensive Leaders

     Defensive leaders against TJ were:

LB Trayce Boudoin-7 first contacts,1 assists, 8 tackles, 3 for losses, 1 fumble recovery

DB Shawn Lang--5 first contacts, 5 tackles, 2 for sacks

DB Chris Gohlke--3 first contacts, 3 assists, 6 tackles

DB Ricky Eckhard--4 first contacts, 2 assists, 6 tackles, 1 deflected pass
