Coach Burnett Talks About Week 9

October 24, 1999

West Orange-Stark Game

We had several opportunities to win the game, and things just didn't bounce our way. We had some chances that could have turned the game very easily, but it didn't happen. West Orange, to their credit, did what they had to do to win the game. They controlled our offense, and we made some mistakes at times that, if we had corrected them, could have changed the outcome of the game. But we have to credit West Orange. They came in here with their backs against the wall and played us a good game.

On Week #9

What we have to do now is realize we are a good football team, and sometimes good football teams lose a game. Even in the 70s, all those years we went to the playoffs, there was never a team that went undefeated. The kids and fans have to understand that just because we lost a game, doesn't mean we're not a good football team.

It makes you hungry to win. Makes us hone in on getting back on the winning track. We're looking forward to getting back to practice and going over to Vidor and taking care of business. You look at the University of Texas. They've lost two football games, and Saturday they beat the #3 team in the country.

The WO-S game was a great high school football game. It was a battle back and forth. Field position and strategy. We just came up on the short end of it.

A lot of kids were concerned after the game, and I know they're winners and champions. I know they're going to do what they need to do to get us back on the winning track.

Vidor

Vidor's got a good football team. They've got some good athletes, and their new coach has put them in position to be successful. They've found some ways to be aggressive defensively. Offensively, they're doing a good job running the wishbone, and it's effective for the type kids they have. They have some tough kids, and they like to wham it up in there and control the clock. Coach Mathews is doing a good job.

It's going to be a good game. We're excited about the opportunity of getting out there and getting back on the winning track. We're anxious for Friday to get here.

Injuries

Receiver Joey Price and defensive end Michael Brignac will be back. We came out of the WO-S game without any injuries.

Defensive Leaders

     Defensive leaders against WO-S were:

OLB Shawn Lang--10 first contacts, 13 assists, 23 tackles

LB Tracye Boudoin--11 first contacts, 8 assists, 19 tackles, 2 for losses

LB Cody Clark--9 first contacts, 7 assists, 16 tackles

OLB Jared Hanks--6 first contacts, 4 assists, 10 tackles
